Abstract:

The cross-sectional shape of a tunnel is one of the key factors significantly influencing the structural behavior of the tunnel lining (i.e., internal forces and deformations) and the surrounding soil medium. Studies on conventional tunnels, such as circular and rectangular, have been carried out under various conditions related to the geotechnical environment, as well as different types and configurations of the support structures. However, the behavior of sub-rectangular tunnels has only recently been studied by a few researchers. These studies have primarily focused on analyzing the influence of the sub-rectangular shape on the behavior of the continuous tunnel lining, without considering the existence of joints. The present study is conducted to evaluate the influence of joint parameters (number, location, and characteristics of joints) and of geotechnical parameters (such as deformation modulus, horizontal pressure coefficient, etc.) on the behavior of the segmental lining in a sub-rectangular tunnel under static loading.
